Social Determinants of Health

Statistics show that underserved minority groups are disproportionately impacted by domestic violence due to factors such as poverty, lack of access to healthcare, housing insecurities, unsafe neighborhoods, and substandard education.

To address this issue, TES utilizes a public health approach to support victims via trauma recovery strategies that address the five (5) social determinants of health:

 1) Economic Stability 2) Education 3) Social & Community 4) Neighborhood & Environment and 5) Access to Healthcare so survivors of color can be safe and healthy where they live, work, and play.

Education Access & Quality

Education is central to our preventive work to prevent gender-based violence. Research shows that low levels of education can increase the risk of experiencing intimate partner violence.  And given that poverty and a lack education are inextricably linked in communities of color, TES works with local agencies and educational institutions to reduce such risks by providing survivors access to obtain their GED, receive skills training, and obtain undergraduate and graduates degrees, if they desire.  Higher education levels can result in changes in attitudes and behaviors that can decrease the prevalence of domestic violence in minority communities.   We also work with local nonprofits to educate individuals about the signs and symptoms of domestic violence as well as the resources so individuals can seek help if needed.

Health Care Access & Quality

Recognizing that domestic violence severely impacts an individual’s physical and mental health, TES has partnered with certified health professionals to provide medical forensic examinations, routine wellness exams, and immunizations, at NO CHARGE to the survivor.  Mental health treatment is also available via tele-health platform(s) with a LCSW provider. By adopting a holistic health approach, TES aims to respond to domestic violence, improve population health, and advance health equity.

Neighborhood & Built Environment

Safe and affordable housing is a survivor's # 1 priority. Without adequate housing, a survivor's safety can be compromised leaving them even more vulnerable to continued abuse or death.  TES aims to provide safe and affordable housing for victims fleeing domestic violence. By working with hotels, shelters, and apartment communities, TES utilizes a hybrid model to keep victims safe and away from their abuser without subjecting them or their minor children to homelessness.  Emergency and long-term housing solutions are available.

Economic Stability

The lack of economic resources often makes survivors of color particularly vulnerable to violence. TES works to break the patterns of poverty and abuse by partnering with local agencies to provide skills training and creating work force development so survivors can be self-sufficient and e empowered to leave their abuser and care for themselves and their families.  By doing so, we are not only empowering survivors financially, but are contributing to a healthy workforce that can positively impact our community.

Social & Community Context

Survivor restoration also requires a strong social and community environment.  TES recognizes that above all else, we must address a survivors' trauma and gain a better understanding of the root causes of the violence a survivor is experiencing.  To that end, the TES team understands that we can’t help a person go forward until we know where they’ve come from.   Our team listens attentively and only asks questions that allow us to provide customized services, understanding that justice looks different for every survivor. We do not judge or assume when a survivors reach out because we want survivors to lean on us as they are being healed and restored.
